Combining the contents of two 1985 LPs (A Treasury of Early Musical Comedy, Vol. 1 [AEI 1170] and A Treasury of Early Musical Comedy, Vol. 2 [AEI 1171]), we are in front of recordings of music from nine operettas and musical revues that ran on Broadway between 1898 and 1920, most of it by Victor Herbert, the leading American theatrical composer of the period. (Only three of the 30 tracks, "A Pretty Girl Is Like a Melody," "Mandy," and "I'm the Guy Who Guards the Harem," all originating in the Ziegfeld Follies of 1919 and all written by Irving Berlin, are not by Herbert.)
The recordings are not contemporaneous with the shows, however; a producer's note estimates that they date from 1932-1933 (though another source dates at least two of them, "Toyland" and the finale from Babes in Toyland, as being from 1935).
In addition, in most cases, the performers are unknown. In only a few instances, members of the original casts are credited with re-creating their performances from decades past. With the exception of Babes in Toyland, the shows are not among Herbert's best-remembered, and with the exception of a few melodies -- "Toyland," "A Pretty Girl Is Like a Melody," "Mandy" -- the songs are long forgotten as well. But then, the album is presented by the Council for Musical Theatre, a nonprofit foundation, and so is intended to fulfill historical and educational goals rather than commercial ones. As such, the relatively low sound quality and the mystery surrounding the performers are less significant than the music itself, which includes many solos and duets sung as opera-like arias; a few comic songs set to jaunty tempos; and some overtures and other instrumental medleys, usually set to waltz time. These are typical of the kind of music listeners are likely to be familiar with from better-known Herbert operettas, and fans of such music will welcome such a collection of rarities, even if it's usually not known who's singing.
