The soprano, Galina Savova, was born in 1940 in Varna. She finished her vocal studies in Sofia after beginning her training in Varna, and became a member of the Sofia National Opera in 1966.
In 1971, on a tour with that company in France, she received great acclaim singing the title role in Turandot at the Paris Grand Opéra - a role which was to become a favorite of audiences throughout her career. Between 1982 and 1987 Galina Savova was a member of the Frankfurt Opera, at the same time she guest appeared in the opera houses of Hamburg, Munich, Marseille, Lisbon and Barcelona.
At the Arena di Verona she was a regular soloist between 1980 and 1988 singing in La Gioconda, Aida and Turandot. During 1988 she sang Turandot in Venice, and Tosca in Naples. Following her December 15th, 1979 debut at the Metropolitan Opera as Aida she continued singing there through 1984 as Amelia in The Masked Ball, Santuzza, Gioconda, Tosca, Giorgetta in Il Tabarro and Venus in Tannhäuser. In 1992 she sang Turandot with the Chicago Lyric Opera. In addition to the above mentioned roles, Galina Savova was often heard as Manon Lescaut, Minnie, Senta in The Flying Dutchman, Eva in Die Meistersinger, Ortrud in Lohengrin and roles in the Slavic opera literature.
