Australian composer Helen Gifford's Iphigenia in Exile is a work with history. Gifford originally created her work with librettist Richard Meredith in the mid-1980s. She had long been fascinated by the Euripides story of Iphigenia. “Here was a woman who has no real control over her life and has been banished,” she said to journalist Dan Rule in an interview that appeared in The Age just prior to the recording broadcast tonight. “ This was a woman whose life had been absolutely denigrated by this terrible occupation ... It was really quite an affecting story.”

Gifford completed the score and even got so far as recording the mandolin guitar and women’s chorus components, but then, as she says, “real life intervened.” Composer David Young, the artistic director of Chamber Made Opera, discovered the score about 18 months ago. The 1986 work had never been performed but Young felt it had much to offer. He re-titled (from Iphigenia in Exile to simply EXILE) and re-imagined the work as a combined ‘live action’ and animation screen opera to be delivered in downloadable form as an iPad, iPhone and internet viewing experience.

EXILE is set on a desolate coastline and explores the psychological state of Iphigenia as she reflects on her time as a high priestess of human sacrifices. There is a chorus of six female vocalists which acts as a traditional Greek chorus making critical comment on the action. This chorus has been scored to be pre-recorded and Gifford comments on this saying: “Pre-recording the chorus will give more possibilities for changing the sound, especially important with their final utterances which are more in the nature of choric effects and where a spectral, disembodied sound is wanted...”

Also pre-recorded are a series of glissandi played on the mandolin guitar which producer Duncan Yardley notes is a zither containing at least 30 scordatura-tuned strings. In addition to soprano Deborah Kayser singing the title role the work is scored for piccolo, clay flute, clarinet, bass clarinet, mandolin and assorted percussion performed by Speak Percussion.
