Alexander Sveshnikov was a choral composer, a choral conductor, and a choral teacher. He was an apparently beloved and celebrated figure in Russian musical life, and this disc commemorates a concert dedicated to him given in September 1990 in the Grand Hall of the Moscow Conservatoire.
On the evidence of this performance by the Moscow Choral School Chorus under Victor Popov and the Moscow Conservatory Students Chorus under Boris Tevlin, no one could ask for more dedicated and committed performers: love and affection radiate from every note. From the youngest and most ardent soloist to the seasoned and most fervent chorister, the singing is all at a supremely high level. Clearly, Popov and Tevlin are superb conductors who brought all their talents to bear in this concert. While the music itself ranges from Sveshnikov's own compositions and arrangements of folk songs to three excerpts from Rachmaninov's Vespers, the performers make it all sound deep, warm, and exalted. And while some listeners may find a whole disc of Russian choral singing a bit too much to swallow at one sitting, listeners who love the sound of Russian choral singing will be enchanted. Melodiya's all-digital sound is fine as far as it goes, but merely hanging a couple of microphones in the hall fails to capture the real sound of a Russian chorus at full cry.
