Operette in 3 Akte
Pasticcio nach Indigo und die vierzig Räuber
musikalisch bearbeitet von E. Reiterer
Text: L. Stein und C. Lindau
Uraufführung: Wien, “Venedig in Wien”, 15. Juni 1906
It has often been stated that it was Jacques Offenbach who convinced Johann Strauss II to write operettas. In fact, it was Strauss’ first wife, Jetty Treffz, a singer, who prevailed upon him to venture into this challenging vocal realm. His first operetta was Indigo und die vierzig Räuber (Indigo and the Forty Thieves), from 1871. While it would hardly become one of his more famous efforts, it contained much good music, including a waltz entitled Tausend und eine Nacht.
The operetta eventually attracted the attention of lesser-known composer Ernst Reiterer, who decided to revise Strauss’ effort and retitle it after the waltz number for a new Vienna production in 1906. He also adapted an operetta, Frülingsluft, from music by Johann’s brother Josef Strauss. Opinion will differ concerning whose version of the “Indigo” operetta is the better one, but Strauss mavens will prefer the original, though neither has achieved any currency over the years. Still, individual numbers from Strauss’ Indigo, such as the overture and the Indigo-Quadrille, appear with considerable frequency. The Reiterer A Thousand and One Nights is not to be dismissed, however. For example, the Intermezzo is masterfully put together and was once a quite popular piece in Vienna and other parts of Europe.
