Torvaldo e Dorliska is an operatic dramma semiserio in two act by Gioachino Rossini to an Italian libretto by Cesare Sterbini, based on Les amours du chevalier de Faublas by the revolutionary Jean-Baptiste Louvet de Couvrai, whose work was the source of the Lodoïska libretto set by Luigi Cherubini (1791), and Lodoiska set by Stephen Storace (1794), and Simon Mayr (1796).

Torvaldo e Dorliska is a rescue opera with an eventual happy ending. The inclusion of buffo roles is the reason for its designation as a ‘semiserio’ work, similar to Rossini’s La gazza ladra.

The Italian soprano, Fiorella Pediconi, completed her music and singing studies at the Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi in Milan.

After finishing her studies, Fiorella Pediconi started a successful stage career in Italy, where she appeared first as Rosina in the Barbier von Sevilla and as Elvira in I Puritani by Bellini. In 1987 she could be heard at the Teatro Regio Turin as Nausicaa in Ulisse by Luigi Dallapiccola, in Ferrara as Fiorilla in Rossini’s IL Turco in Italia. In 1987-1988 she appeared as guest at the Glyndebourne Festival as Violetta in La Traviata (she then also sang in 1988 with the Glyndebourne Touring Opera) and as an Italian Singer in Capriccio by R. Strauss; in 1989 at the Covent Garden Opera in London as Gilda in Rigoletto. In 1991 she appeared in Turin in L’Ispirazione by Sylvano Bussotti, in the same year in Alexandria as Sandrina in La finta giardiniera by Mozart (whereby she had rehearsed this difficult role in six days). In 1992 she participated at the Grand Théâtre Geneva in performances of Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny by K. Weill; in 1989 she appeared at the Teatro Verdi in Triest as Traviata; in 1993 at the Opera House of Pisa as Alice Ford in Verdi’s Falstaff. She made guest appearances also at Milan’s La Scala, at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, at the Teatro Fenice in Venice, at the Opera of Rome, at the Théâtre des Champs Élysées in Paris, and at the Teatro Liceo in Barcelona. Her repertoire includes coloratura soprano roles in operas of Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, Cimarosa, Mozart, Rossini, Donizetti, Verdi, Ottorino Respighi, and works of more masters. In 1988 she sang at the Teatro Verdi in Triest the role of Marcolina in the Italian premiere of the opera Il ritorno di Casanova by Girolamo Arrigo.
